Den siste våren / Sister, What Grows Where Land Is Sick?
Narrative Features, Norway 2022, 80 Min., norw. OF, engl. UT
Eira secretly reads her older sister Vera’s diary, which is lovingly illustrated with drawings, photographs and collages. Suddenly, the 14-something girl also sees her environment with new eyes. Eira explores the enchantment of nature, for example the softness of leaves, and discovers her own body. These sensuous impressions are intertwined with Vera’s associative diary entries about environmental destruction, about life beyond the usual expectations, and about mythical creatures. There are also deep chasms in her sister’s enchanted world. Like Vera, this directorial debut frees itself from all restraints. It does not follow a classic narrative structure, instead going with the flow of moods and situations. The director was inspired by her sister, who imagined other, fantastical worlds as an alternative to our reality.
