Lübeck, November 6. The 66th Nordic Film Days Lübeck opened today with a festive celebration at the CineStar Stadthalle cinema. The largest European festival for Nordic and Baltic films launched this year with the German premiere of the animated adventure “Flow”, directed by Latvia’s Gints Zilbalodis, who was on hand to introduce his film.

Other prominent guests in attendance at the NFL opening included the actor – and this year’s recipient of the lifetime achievement award – Kati Outinen, Matīss Kaža, producer and writer “Flow”, Jan Lindenau, mayor of Lübeck, Auðunn Atlason, Iceland’s ambassador to Germany, and Kai Sauer, the Finnish ambassador, Senator for Culture Monika Frank and State Secretary of Schleswig-Holstein Guido Wendt. Icelandic actress Katla Njálsdóttir "When the Light Breaks", greek director Alexandros Avranas "Quiet Life", and director Dāvis Sīmanis "Maria’s Silence".

As part of the ceremonies, the festival bestowed its Honorary Prize for her contributions to cinema to Finnish actor Kati Outinen. She was introduced by Jaana Puskala, head of the international department of the Finnish Film Foundation. ”What is characteristic of all performances of Kati Outinen is their universal humanity and comprehensibility, no matter where they are watched. Kati Outinen's present, touching and precise acting ensures that the message of these films gets through, regardless of language and culture, standing always on the side of a common person, with dignity.”

The festival also announced this year’s recipients of the Nordic Film Days’ script development grant.

The NFL will present a total of 169 films in 212 public screenings between now and November 10, 2024. Some 60 percent of the programme will be available for streaming within Germany.
