Lübeck Meetings at the Nordic Films Days – Focus on Young Talent

Lübeck, October 26, 2023. As part of the 13th Lübeck Meetings, the annual gathering of film professionals at the Nordic Film Days Lübeck, the festival will present a new programme to foster young Nordic and Baltic filmmaking talent.

Future North has invited seven young directors from often under-represented regions of northern Europe to show part of a work in progress and discuss it with industry experts and the public. Among those experts will be Anna Carlsten, producer of the NFL opening film “Together 99” among others, Nicole Gerhards, producer of, among others, films such as “Plus que jamais” by Emily Atef, Josef Kullengård, head of industry for the Göteborg Film Festival, and film journalist and curator of the NFL series section, Wendy Mitchell. The seven directors come from the Baltic States, Greenland, Sápmi, the Faroe Islands, and Schleswig-Holstein. The presentations and discussions are open to the public on Thursday, Nov. 2 and Friday, Nov. 3, 2023. The festival requests registration via e-mail to industry_1@nordische-filmtage.de.

Other Lübeck Meetings events afford German, Nordic, and Baltic industry guests the opportunity to discuss new developments in film and television in the intimate and easy-going festival atmosphere. The very topical subject of artificial intelligence in the creative industries is, of course, one of the issues on the agenda in Lübeck. Illustrator David von Bassewitz (“Stockhausen: Der Mann, der vom Sirius kam”, Carlsen Verlag) and producer and screenwriter Martin Rehbock (“Bonn – Alte Freunde, neue Feinde”, “Alles in bester Ordnung”), will talk about how the creative signature of the maker can be retained while using artificial intelligence, while involving the audience in a live demonstration of the creative process using AI.

Another topical issue will be the subject of Sustainability – The Swedish and Schleswig-Holstein Way, a cooperation with the Wirtschaftsförderung Lübeck (Lübeck economic development council), whose director Dirk Gerdes will introduce the event. In a short presentation, Daniel Chilla, Stockholm’s film commissioner, will introduce an integrated approach that takes into account not only environmental concerns, but also economic and social aspects. Following that, players from regional industry, including Michael Schmerschneider, head of the Kulturakademie of the Vorwerker Diakonie, will address the film industry’s initiatives, report on local experience and approaches, and discuss with the audience what sustainability can and should mean in the present day.

Other Lübeck Meetings events include the Master Class Documentary Film with festival guests Maria Fredriksson (director of “The Gullspång Miracle”) and Carl Olsson (director of “Vintersaga”), the Kulturfunke* Coffee Klatch, and the traditional Film Breakfast held by the MOIN Film Fund – two events that give industry guests an opportunity to network.

The Nordic Film Days Lübeck offers industry guests from distribution, TV, and rights acquisition the chance to discover the NFL films for the German market, with special access to screenings, where they can watch the films alongside an audience – something many of them value. But for those industry representatives not able to travel to Lübeck, the films will be available for streaming. This once again helps the films selected for the 2023 festival to achieve a broader reach in Germany.
