Rakel enjoys life. She adores drawing comics, she likes to party without regret, and manages to get by without making elaborate plans. Not that she doesn’t have big plans for the rest of her life – becoming an astronaut, say, or a beer taster. What is not on the list is motherhood. By the time she realizes that she is pregnant, it’s too late for an abortion and her shock is palpable. Because her relationship to sex is, at best, casual, there is also an open question about who the father might be. So now what? Then the disingenuous ninjababy begins developing its own ideas. It shows up everywhere and interferes – in Rakel’s stomach, her head, and her life, which was already a study in chaos. But Rakel finds a way in the end to remain true to herself. Yngvild Sve Flikke adapted the graphic novel by Inga Sætre (who contributed the animated sequences) into a cinematic tour de force of emotions. Some moments are screamingly funny, others are heartrending, and the best ones combine the two.
