Horror films with child protagonists have been part of cinema history since its early days. Despite that, the cruelty that seems to lie dormant in our pint-sized fellow humans ends up surprising us time and again. At the start, nine-year-old Ida pinches her older sister Anna because their parents are paying more attention to Anna than to her. Anna is autistic and cannot express her pain. After moving into an apartment in a nondescript apartment block, Ida meets Ben, a boy with whom no one else wants to play. He has telepathic powers he uses to manipulate his environment. Little Aisha, in turn, can read introverted Anna’s thoughts. Four children discover their dark, supernatural powers and their games soon turn bloody serious. Elements of the horror genre are subtly used to reflect on exclusion and aggression. In the guise of a horror film, “The Innocents” asks questions that concern all of us in a tension-filled yet entertaining way.
