The route from Moscow to Murmansk in the far, far north has probably never been covered by anyone on the silver screen. We begin this journey with the Finnish student Luisa. The young woman, who still seems unsure what she wants to make of her life – and unsure about anything to do with love – must share the sleeping compartment with the uncouth construction worker Ljoha. The young man gets drunk, makes sexist comments, and falls asleep belching. Outside it’s storming and snowing as the train clatters down the tracks and, inside, a conversation starts. Ljoha doesn’t understand why someone would travel thousands of kilometres through an inhospitable landscape just to look at some ten-thousand-year-old petroglyphs, they’re just rock drawings. He’s going to Murmansk to start a new job in the mines. In the confines of a train compartment, two worlds collide, while two people recognise their undefined yearning and melancholy in each other. Luisa and Ljoha get closer without physically touching while the audience is touched emotionally.
