Mariana is 15, the daughter of a Norwegian mother and a Chilean in exile. When her big brother Hector signs up to serve with the military in Afghanistan, her father turns on him. This in turn scares her little brother Matias. Mariana is not happy about the conflict at home either, and seeks distraction at school. She has a major crush on fellow student Ali2, who has Turkish roots. But can she trust his motives or is he just trying to get into her pants? … Writer Maria Navarro Skaranger won the European Union Prize for Literature with her novel about a multi-cultural clique in big-city Oslo, written in a kind of polyphony of ethnolects, which the film also uses. But behind the uncouth, explicit slang are sensitive characters, with anxieties and fears that the film brings to life onscreen in disturbing fantasy and dream sequences.
