Martin is a teacher – but a really boring one, in fact. Both his students and their parents have noticed and complained. So he and three colleagues with the same problem embrace the theory of psychiatrist Finn Skåderud, that everybody is born with a low level of alcohol in their blood. The four men – using strictly scientific methodology, of course – raise their blood alcohol levels to the recommended .05, and soon beyond that. They quickly become a hit in the classroom, scoring the approval of students and their parents. But their planned alcoholic excesses have serious repercussions … In a social satire that is as buoyant as it is besotted, director Thomas Vinterberg both celebrates inebriation and bemoans its aftermath. With a laser eye, he analyses how the “people’s drug” alcohol acts as both a catalyst for societal tensions, and a social bonding agent.
