“Lake Bodom” opens like a classic slasher movie along the lines of “Friday the 13th”, but soon starts to switch directions. More than 55 years after the original murders, schoolmates Elias and Atte persuade two girls to go camping at exactly the spot where the crime took place. Anyone who knows their genre movies will realise that it can’t end well. Soon the first dead body goes up on the scoreboard, and the survivors are fleeing in panic through the deep, dark forest. Ultimately, however, there’s a twist. We rarely see horror films coming from Finland; there is much to discover here, and not just for fans of the genre. “Lake Bodom” carries the conviction of gloomy atmospherics, surprising plot twists, and a nerve-racking finale whose brutality more than holds its own with kindred films such as “Wolf Creek” or “The Hills Have Eyes”. Be afraid, be very afraid.
