Filmforum, Germany 2014, 68 Min.
From 2005 to 2007, long before the NSA scandal shocked the public, Hamburg artist Christoph Faulhaber and his colleague Lukasz Chrobok ran the fictional security service “Mister Security”, with the self-proclaimed duty of safeguarding public spaces. Their campaigns caused a furore at the Documenta and in front of US embassies, among other places. Faulhaber was watched by German intelligence services and the FBI, and a promised US stipend was rescinded. In his first feature-length film, he explores those documentary and autobiographical elements in the framework of a world styled with the artificiality of the “Grand Theft Auto” video game. The protagonist is avatar Nico Bellic, the director’s alter ego, who ruminates on Faulhaber’s art projects. Taken as a whole, the film is an astute and humorous reflection on reality and identity in a digitised world.
