A heavily made-up woman sits on a park bench and complains to a heavy metal freak that nobody understands her. A primary school teacher and a carpet salesman both break into tears at their jobs after a marital argument. A family man smashes valuable porcelain at a party and is sentenced to death by electric chair. Swedish master director Roy Andersson has designed 50 such vignettes that merge into an inimitable portrayal of humanity’s fears and sorrows. Andersson’s scenes of everyday life shift between realism and the grotesque. The stylised set-ups and leached-out pastels give everything a strong surrealist character. As Roy Andersson said, “I believe life is complicated for all of us and that humour can save us”.
