To push through unpopular decisions with the staff of his IT company, Ravn invents an “uber boss”. But when he gets ready to sell his company, the Icelandic investor Finnur insists on negotiating face to face with the fictional company president, Ravn hires actor Kristoffer to play the role. But when he meets up with the employees, the thespian’s exalted sense of his role threatens to foil Ravn’s business plans. Lars von Trier’s working world comedy combines a condemnation of capitalism that is reminiscent of the Charlie Chaplin slapstick tradition and the burlesque of light farce. In a process the director called “Automavision”, he turned over operation of the camera to a computer programme that selected angles and movement at random, ensuring that even the cinematography wouldn’t be smooth sailing.
