Atmodas antologijaDer Weg zur baltischen Freiheit / The Path to Baltic Freedom

Competition Documentaries, Latvia 2013, 98 Min.

Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika policies of the 1980s awoke feelings of nationalism in the Soviet Baltic republics. In 1988, the Latvian Popular Front was founded, with the goal of re-establishing an independent Latvian state. But it would take until August 1991 until that independence was recognised internationally and by the Soviet Union. The film documents the decisive turning points of the “singing revolution”, from the beginning, when singing the banned Baltic national anthems became an act of resistance against the central government in Moscow, to the demonstrations in Riga in January 1991, and the dissolution of the Popular Front after independence. The filmmaker draws our attention to lesser-known aspects of the revolt, as well as the efforts by the secret police and the communist party to bring the mass movement under control.
