Filmforum, Germany / Iceland 2012, 87 Min.
1949, post-War Germany. Destruction all over, no perspective for young women and a country that is missing its men. Then the Icelandic farmers' association placed an advert in the Lübecker Nachrichten newspaper: "Farm labourers from Germany wanted”. 238 women follow the call and ship to a North Atlantic island that they have never been to before. It is Iceland's first case of mass immigration. Each of the women has her very personal reasons for leaving her destroyed homeland and choosing isolation on the volcanic island. None of them even considers that they might be being sent to these remote farms as potential wedding candidates. Upon their arrival they face a 19th century environment. Nevertheless, most of the women choose to stay: some discover their fortune, others do not. Today, 60 years later, they speak for the first time - humorously and pensively - about their lives, the sacrifices they made, and their new home - their home in the ice.
