Westerland

Filmforum, Germany 2012, 90 Min.

Sylt in the winter. Cem is an apprentice at the regulatory authority and attends evening classes. He fervently pursues his goal of becoming a landscape architect, has never left the island because he likes it there and is a member of a well-integrated migrant family. On the beach he meets Jesús, a bum who tells a bunch of made-up stories. They decide to be friends. Jesús moves in with Cem. At first the young Turk manages to keep up his learning quota, but the vagrant friend soon distracts him. It becomes clear that this will become a difficult endeavour. His brother cannot understand Cem's interest in Jesús. Cem's boss is annoyed that Cem is calling in ill to help out Jesús, who steals, smokes pot and suffers from an eating disorder. Ultimately, the two of them cut themselves off from the rest of the world in their flat in a Westerland high-rise building. Cem wants to save his friend, but the destructive energy Jesús radiates seems overwhelming.
