Filmforum, Germany 2009, 97 Min., German version
Thirty years have passed since around one dozen rakish individiuals met at Kölner Tanzbrunnen one hot evening in July, hoping for a career in singing or at least to have some fun. These performances were documented by fimmaker Peter Goedel in his now legendary film "Talent Contest" (1979). He is now producer of a new film that traces the lives of the former "talents": Manfred Behrens tracked them down. Almost every one of them still has something to do with music, and that evening in July 1979 remains unforgotten for all of them. Some play music at home, some try to earn a living with it. One performs as "Westerwald-Elvis", another as "Junge aus dem Vorgebirge" (lit: "the boy from the foothills"). The new film confronts the "talents" with their performances of 30 years ago. Everyone sees themselves on stage again – only 30 years younger. This evokes very different reactions. One man laughs out loud and says: "There have been worse," while others become sentimental: "I looked good back then," or "Those were the best ten minutes of my life."
