Tugt & utugt

"Swedish Sin" and "Danish Blue": In the 1970s, Scandinavian pornography was an export hit like Danish butter or knäckebrot (crispbread) – and the north of Europe was considered something of a "sexual utopia" for the rest of the world. This documentary film gives a detailed account of how that came to pass. Taking examples from literature and the visual arts, it presents a panorama of erotic obsessions reaching from Herman Bang's early novels to the legalization of pornography in Denmark on 1st July 1969. "Piquant films" of the turn of the century and titillating postcards and magazines illustrate the early – though clandestine –presence of sexual lust in the media. Allowing these to become an accepted part of human existence is what the film interprets as a social movement that began with post-World War I feminists and reached into 1950s teenage culture. Contraception and the fight for abortion laws are further landmarks in this stimulating history of vice in Denmark and Sweden from a pointedly female perspective.
