Armadillo

"If anyone believes Danish soldiers are handing out gummy-bears in Afghanistan, they will be shocked when they see this film," commented Colonel Lars Møller, Head of International Operations with the Danish military, after the premiere of "Armadillo" at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Indeed, the film incited a hefty debate throughout Denmark. The Minister of Defence even demanded that the film material be handed over, as Jonas Metz Pedersen's stirring portrayal of young Danish soldiers in Afghanistan supposedly disclose state secrets, thus jeopardizing national security. "Armadillo" accompanies volunteers away from their concerned families to the Danish military base in Afghanistan, where an initial enthusiasm over fighting the Taliban makes way for an increasing loss of orientation until the soldiers are overwhelmed by paranoia and alienation. Jonas Metz Pedersen, who won the Documentary Film Prize at last year's Nordic Film Days for "Love on Delivery/Ticket to Paradise", continues his series of brilliantly composed socio-critical documentaries with "Armadillo", in which a self-satisfied Denmark is confronted with foreign cultures.
