Ulrik has served a 12-year sentence for murder. Now he has been released from prison, but he is far from being free. He is utterly dependent on his former employer Jensen. Jensen gets him a job in Sven's car repair shop and a place to stay with his sister Karen Margrethe. Ulrik is glad to assist the man; satisying his sexually frustrated landlady, on the other hand, is something he would rather do without. And then there are a number of other things Jensen demands of him: Ulrik is to shoot the man who ratted on him 12 years ago. Although he would rather look to his son and his pregnant daughter-in-law, he is so indebted to Jensen that he picks up the gun one more time ... After a screenplay by top-selling Danish author Kim Fupz Aakeson, "A Somewhat Gentle Man" is a compelling, bizarre drama about resocialization that is full of laconic dialogue, black humour and impressive acting. In his third film with Hans Petter Moland after "Zero Kelvin" and "Aberdeen", and at the head of a cast of Norwegian originals, Stellan Skarsgård as Ulrik embodies a character that is as funny as it is humanly touching.
