Mamma Gógó

Gógó, a film director's 80-year old mother, is not stupid. In fact, the way in which she outwits a traffic check despite high blood alcohol content is pretty clever. But then certain symptoms of deficiency begin to show: Gógó falls asleep in front of the TV, which leads to the fire brigade being called; she starts using abusive language at her daughter-in-law and forgets the key to her apartment while leaving the bathwater running. So her son decides: Mother must be put in a home! Once there, the old lady is quickly diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Fridrik Thór Fridriksson's "Mama Gógó" is a very personal and moving film that nevertheless also touches on the tragicomic aspects of dementia. The figur of Gógó's son, the director, however, is a somewhat sad figure: Hilmir Snær Gudnason plays the role of Fridriksson's alter ego, who feels compelled to sell off his mother's belongings during her own lifetime after his old people's film "Children of Nature" (!) flops and he loses money on the stock exchange. "Mama Gógó" is the wholehearted and self-critical depiction of a societal problem that not only affects Iceland.
