R

The young "R" is sent to the infamous prison in the provincial Danish town of Horsens; where he comes from remains unclear. It is said that he stabbed someone. Soon "R" faces the relentless hierarchy within the prison walls. He is subjected to rituals of submission and must render favours to gangster bosses: beat up rivals, traffic smuggled goods. When "R" finds a secret way of smuggling drugs between the prison tracts, he initially rises up in the prison hierarchy. But then "R" gets caught between the lines. With the exception of lead actor Pilou Asbæk and Dulfi Al-Jabouri, who plays "R"'s best prison buddy Rashid, the entire cast consists of former inmates. The two directors Tobias Lindholm and Michael Noer were locked inside "Horsens Statsfængsel" for 27 shooting days in order to capture as authentic an atmosphere as possible for their film. The result is a masterful prison drama that conveys a realistic depiction of life behind bars and which has already been presented with awards at international film festivals to honour its intensity.
