"Ten hectares of land, three cows, five sheep and four pigs. Run-down buildings, hard work, non-stop. No tractor, a 16-hour work day in summer, no days off, no holidays." Director Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen describes her mother's life dream – which her mother fulfilled. When collective farming was loosened in Latvia in 1985, and private farming was legalized, Tale Kalnas fulfills her dream for an own patch of land. Together with her second husband, a vet, she just manages to live off the same. Until Latvia joins the EU in 2004, and financial need forces Tale Kalnas to sell her land. Ilze Burkovska Jacobsen's documentation depicts the economic development of her country, from 1930s prosperity to the meager years of newly-won independence.
