The pyramids, the Taj Mahal, the Niagara Falls, the Antarctis – Oiva Vilhelm Kovannen has seen them all (and everything between them). And he filmed it all! A few years ago, director Antti Seppänen bought two boxes full of 8mm films at a flea market. They contained more or less the whole world. Seppänen knew immediately "I had found a treasure." He managed to find a cousin of the deceased filmer and reconstructed his life. Oiva Vilhelm Kovannen, born in 1911, was a trained draughtsman who worked as a mechanic in World War Two, then as an employee in a glass factory. When he turned 42 he turned his back to his previous life, secretly bought a "superexpensive camera" and joined a steamboat crew. He recorded what he saw on his travels in his films and in letters to his mother and sister. He travelled across the globe several times before passing away in 2001. Antti Seppänen has created a poetic, global panorama from the recordings of this passionate traveller, who longed for icebergs when standing in the shade of the pyramids and vice versa.
