Special, Norway 2007, 52 Min., English subtitles
Renas is an Iraqi Kurd. He speaks Norwegian, has a job and many friends. For his fortune to be complete he lacks but a wife. Thus he marries a Kurdish woman by long-distance wedding. But when she finally stands before him in person, Renas is endlessly disappointed. In no way does Fermesk resemble the princess that he had come to expect on account of a photograph. Fermesk is anything but a princess, unless one sized XXL. When she further discloses to him on their wedding night that she is no longer a virgin, Renas has blows his top: they will live together for one year to keep up appearances before the family. But then they will get a divorce. But little does Renas know that ice-cold feelings may yet thaw … director Hisham Zaman, who has Kurdish origins and previously examined the fate of refugees in his award-winning short film “Bawke”, gives an account of a very personal dilemma faced by an immigrant – whereby the contrast between a deeply snowed-in landscape and “oriental” temperaments develops a very specific charm.
