Das Schweigen der Quandts

The Quandt family are one of Germany’s wealthiest and most influential families. Within the past 100 years, their business empire has included Altana, Varta and - to this day - industrialist icon BMW. The Quandts, however, have up to now been concealing their history and the origins of certain parts of their fortune. The authors of the film have spent five years of research in archives in Germany and abroad. The documents that they collected in the process have allowed for a gradual reconstruction of the true origins of parts of the family fortune. The conclusion: the Quandts had evidently made full use of the economic advantages that National Socialism had offered them. Slave labour by inmates of concentration camps and other forced labourers enabled the expansion of their enterprise. The enormous growth of fortune that the Quandts achieved between 1933 and 1945 was the basis for much of their aggrandisement in the post-war German economy. This first documentary about the family’s history has successfully torn down a wall of silence: only a few days after the surprising first publication of the film, the heirs of the family collectively declared that they were very moved and now intend to reappraise their ‘Third Reich’ history.
