Special, Germany 2007, 93 Min.
They met on a trip to Laboe: Margret, bourgeois widow of a bankrupt entrepreneur, and Sigmar, rough-and-ready proletarian and former site foreman. The elderly couple decide to get married, more out of fear of being alone than out of genuine affection, and move in together in Margret’s house. Much to Margret’s surprise, Sigmar brings his cat, which soon triggers an increasingly relentless running battle between the two spouses. One day Sigmar finds the lifeless body of his cat and the fight escalates until a deadly catastrophe seems inevitable … Scriptwriter Daniel Nocke (“Summer of ‘04”) and director Kaspar Heidelbach (“The Tragedy of the Pamir”) have created an intense psychological thriller after the novel of 1966 by “Inspector Maigret” author Georges Simenon. The performance of lead actors Hannelore Hoger and Götz George is every bit as strong as that of the initial film version (starring Simone Signoret and Jean Gabin).
