Competition Narrative Films, Denmark 2006, 100 Min., English subtitles
The first comedy by Lars von Trier since “The Kingdom“: Ravn, owner of a Danish IT company, pretends to his employees that there is another boss who is responsible for all the unpopular decisions. When the company is to be sold to the Icelandic investor Finnur – acted by the well-known Icelandic director Fridrik Thór Fridriksson –, the latter insists on meeting the “Boss of it All“ in person, upon which Ravn employs the actor Kristoffer. But Kristoffer’s tendency to over-act threatens to destroy Ravn’s plans. Lars von Trier, who most recently pleased an arthouse audience with his minimalist experiments “Dogville“ and “Manderlay“, surprises his fans with this convincing, burlesque comedy that features excellent actors and an uncomplicated style of narration. The camerawork was actually done by a computer programme, selecting the frames by a random generator.
