Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2007, 72 Min., English subtitles
In the 1980s a youth movement developed in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro quarter. Initially it demanded for the establishment of a meeting-point, the now famous ‘Ungdomshus’. The movement would later write Danish post-war history under the name ‘BZ’ by organizing spectacular squats, street action and militant confrontations with the police. In 1986 the struggles came to a climax in a nine-day siege of the Copenhagen Ryesgarde. Helle Hansen’s documentary is the first film to give a detailed examination of the BZ movement’s history. The director had access to previously unpublished stock material by the Danish police. Interviews with three leading minds behind the BZ movement as well as with the head of police of the time, a city functionary and a photographer underline this well-balanced, exciting documentary about historic events.
