Competition Documentaries, Sweden 2006, 157 Min., English subtitles
In first grade “The Children from Jordbro” wanted to adopt orphans from Vietnam when they were older, now they have children of their own. In 1972 director Rainer Hartleb filmed them for the first time as they started school – and continued to do so every year. 34 years after beginning his long-term project he met once more with ‘his’ children. They are now in their forties, some have founded families, others are single or divorced, some have grown happy and some feel disappointed by life. Life has left its tracks on all of them, but they are all recognisable in the old recordings. “You’re the same person deep down”, says Therese, who as a child resembled a happy Pippi Longstocking and she herself is the best proof for her theory. Other biographies, however, have experienced abrupt ruptures. And not least these are what make “Everyone’s fine” a fascinating documentary film project about setting the course for life, comparable only to Winfried Junge’s “Children of Golzow”.
