Retrospective, Denmark 1944, 100 Min.
A murderer has night-time Copenhagen in his – or is it her? – thrall. Each time a strangled victim is found, witnesses describe hearing a strangely high-pitched voice singing a French chanson. Cabaret artist Odette sings precisely this “Murder Melody” in her act, which is why the police suspect her of being involved in the gruesome ritual murders. But when Odette’s ex-husband, hypnotist Valdini, turns up after many years, the case is solved. This atmospheric blend of film noir and thriller was the first Danish film of its kind in 1944 – and inspired Ole Bornedal’s “Nightwatch” fifty years later, in which the serial killer’s crimes are also accompanied by a melody. “Murder Melody” is one of a handful of noir films created during the occupation, whose heavily charged themes and exquisite camerawork are unsurpassed in Danish cinematic history.
