Ruudi

Children´s and Youth Films, Estonia 2006, 90 Min., English subtitles, German commentary

Little Ruudi loves the Vikings. He wishes he could set sail with them across the sea. But for now he will have to make do with make-believe: a model boat and some plasticine figures. Then one day a huge Viking ship really does run aground on the island where Ruudi lives with his mother. The problem is, Ruudi can’t go on board unless he is accompanied by a parent or carer, but women have no place on a Viking ship, and there’s no father in sight. What is he to do? Ruudi launches a be-my-father competition. The prize is not only a whole new family, but also the Viking treasure that is said to be buried in the bay. The candidates are three very different islanders. But then two shady characters also turn up, lured by the treasure, and plunge Ruudi into a dangerous seafaring adventure. It is the contrast between the wild life of the Viking warriors that Ruudi imagines and the quiet everyday life of his little island home that lends this delightful film its poignant charm.
