Competition Documentaries, Sweden 2005, 78 Min.
Swedish artists Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald come to Paris in the early years of the 20th century to learn from Matisse about the handling of colour and form. On their return to Stockholm, Sigrid and Isaac struggle for recognition and respect. In the 20s and 30s, especially, Isaac, as a Jew, is repeatedly subjected to hate campaigns. He eventually succeeds in becoming a professor at the academy of art and receives major commissions for the opera. “Sigrid und Isaac” is not only a magnificent documentary collage of paintings, photographs and vintage film footage, with a sound track featuring Swedish actors Gunilla Röör and Philip Zandén reading excerpts from Sigrid and Isaac’s letters, but is also a deeply moving love story. The film’s greatest merit, however, must surely be that it has rediscovered the artistic legacy of Sigrid and Isaac, whose strength lies in their capacity for capturing a fleeting mood or gesture. This documentary opens our eyes to that.
