Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2006, 80 Min., English subtitles
Gasolin is Denmark’s most popular rock band, dominating the Danish music scene for almost nine years until their breakup in 1978 with a sound somewhere between Queen and folksong. Even now, Gasolin continues to exert a remarkable fascination on a growing community of fans. Small wonder, then, that this documentary about them has broken all box office records. This spring it became the most-viewed documentary film of all time in Denmark. Director Anders Østergaard has interviewed all four members of the band and used vintage footage of Copenhagen in the 1960s and 1970s. One particular focus is on the band’s internal disagreement over whether to aim for an international career or concentrate more strongly on their Danish roots. A disastrous US tour took that decision out of their hands. In this respect, this outstanding documentary also gives an insight into the way Danes see themselves.
