Homage, Norway 2005, 90 Min.
At the height of his popularity, politically committed television journalist Tomas Stockman decides to give up his career to devote himself to his family. He returns with his wife and son to his childhood village, where he plans to join his brother Peter in the family business bottling the world’s purest spring water. But the welfare of the village, which he hopes to enhance with his enterprise, is threatened. Tests show that the water is heavily contaminated by pesticides. Tomas wants to go public with the findings, but Peter, fearing bankruptcy, opposes him – and he’s not the only one. Soon, Tomas Stockman finds himself fighting his battle for truth alone. Erik Skjoldbjærg’s contemporary take on Ibsen is an eco-thriller and family drama set against the rugged backdrop of Norway’s west coast, where the darker side of the local community spirit reveals itself. Not only the language has been updated here. The concept has, too, lending the lie to Ibsen’s autocratic figure and culminating in his final words: “I can’t do it alone.“
