Inspired by true events, “Blackport” is set in a fishing village in the 1980s, just as the Icelandic government, under pressure from the European Union, was imposing catch quotas. The measures were intended to protect endangered species from overfishing. At the centre of the series are married couple Harpa and Grímur, who are building a small fishing with like-minded friends, just as the entire industry is in upheaval. Monitoring the catch quotas is difficult and Harpa and Grímur find way to circumvent the regulations. Over time, immigrants from all over the world arrive in the village looking for work. The village becomes a city, and the protagonists have to find a way to adjust to the new society while still preserving their own identity and community. When they begin to turn on each other, some of the group pay with their lives, and Harpa and Grímur’s marriage becomes an acrimonious battle fuelled by jealousy and greed.
