The ketchup-blood horror show that Nelly presents at show-and-tell doesn’t really thrill the audience, but Nelly isn’t fazed. The young girl’s approach to life is dauntless and self-confident. This year, she’s spending her holidays with her Uncle Hannibal. But what on earth is going on in the basement of his villa? “There are monsters down there”, he said, “don’t go down”. So of course, that’s precisely what she does. Nelly and her dog London discover a family secret and an international organization of monster hunters. The young girl aspires to become one of the monster agents. But the more she finds out about Frankenstein creations, werewolves, and vampires, the more she starts to wonder who exactly needs protecting from whom. Amanda Adolfsson’s adaptation of the successful book series by Martin Widmark is a family movie, in which the line between laughing out loud and being creeped out is very thin. In the end, the real horror is revealed as a world in which the price of happiness is conformity.
