When Prince Charles and Diana stood at the altar in London on July 29, 1981, another couple in far-away Sarpsborg also got married. Liv and Terje named their daughter after the Princess of Wales, and it is her perspective that informs this story of the turbulent ups and downs of a marriage in the petit-bourgeois milieu of a Norwegian row-house settlement in the 1980s and 1990s. Marital quarrels and reconciliations, domesticity and pain all accumulate to a make a permanent state of crisis, which their daughter is eager to escape … Driven by Bruce Springsteen’s rock ‘n roll, and the ubiquitous disco of the era, the film is the spirited and realistic depiction of family routines characterised by a complete lack of glamour and human foibles. Director Charlotte Blom said, “A successful comedy must always contain tragedy, pain and loss as well”.
