Retrospective, Estonia 1968, 79 Min., eston. OV, engl. st
In the waning days of World War II, a German army unit arrives at a psychiatric clinic in a remote corner of Estonia, under orders to liquidate the patients. But they must postpone their mission when it emerges that an English spy is posing as a patient. The Gestapo officer Windisch quickly identifies five possible suspects. But as he tries to pinpoint one of the deranged men as the impersonator, the lines between reality and delusion begin to blur … With its stylized sets and high-contrast black-and-white cinematography, this bizarre spy story is at times reminiscent of the silent film classic “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari”. But in fact, it was ahead of its time. The authorities of Soviet Estonia put up major barriers to showing the film – yet this cinematic metaphor of the absurdity of totalitarian regimes is now considered noteworthy in the canon of Estonian film history.
