Vilde’s mother takes her own life just before Christmas. On her own, the 15-year-old doesn’t know where to go. Child services wants her to call her father. But he has a family of his own and Vilde has never had any contact with him. She is certainly not going into a children’s home; she has a completely different destination in mind – the hip young neighbourhood of Harajuku in Tokyo, where garish styles like what she wears are the norm. She’s even prepared to prostitute herself to pay for a plane ticket. But when Vilde’s father responds to the text message she sent, father and daughter meet for the first time at Oslo’s main train station … Set in the bustling train station, “Harajuku” unfurls (using some trendy animation sequences) as a drama about a young person who, confronted with the disappointing world of adults, wants to flee into the lovely, colourful realm of manga and anime.
