Patrimonium

Competition Documentaries, Denmark 2019, 74 Min., dan., engl., ger., sw. OV, engl. st

Four manor houses in Denmark and northern Germany. Their aristocratic owners host hunts, horse shows, and tours through their homes. They dine in mannered style at midday, survey their old-growth tree stock, and watch as wind turbines are erected on their latifundia. As the owners of estates and forests, they are as interested in agricultural policy as they are in the weather forecast. The film shows them in their native biotopes and on a visit to a museum – where everything looks much like it does in their homes … In long, mostly static takes, “Patrimonium” looks behind the façade of old ancestral homes. The documentary uses artfully composed “living pictures” to observe people of both sexes and various ages who are, in many ways, bound by tradition, while at the same time trying to get in step with the modern age.
