The new Munch museum in Oslo’s Lambda neighbourhood is scheduled to open in 2020. So “Munch in Hell” is perfectly timed to look at the life and work of Norway’s most famous artist. But more than that, this well-researched documentary reveals new facets of the life of Munch, a man beset by inner demons, whose work was interpreted by international experts. Using film clips and documentation, the film also tells the story of his legacy – an estate comprising more than 20,000 graphics and sketches, as well as 1,000 paintings, which Munch left to the city of Oslo upon his death in 1944. It reconstructs in detail the complicated history of the construction of the museum dedicated to Munch, and the spectacular series of thefts of classic Munch paintings. And, of course, the well-known portraits that Munch created in 1905 for his patron, ophthalmologist and collector Max Linde from Lübeck, do not come up short.
