MūrisUnruhige Grenze / D Is for Division

Competition Documentaries, Latvia / Tschechische Republik 2018, 87 Min., lat., russ., OV, engl. st

The director Simanis travelled along the Russian-Latvian border, capturing impressions on both sides of a strange looking intermediate world. He met a Latvian patriot who had been obliged to exile himself in Russia of all places after a protest action, he filmed in an EU border monitoring station, came across a religious procession and found a team of film students shooting a thriller about an Islamic invasion. And he interviewed Ayo Beness, called the Black Lenin, a Latvian man who has gone to war for Russia against the Ukraine. Off-screen, Simanis comments that the border liberates your powers of imagination. Which would also mean that the people here see things that do not in reality exist. However, the starting point of “D Is for Division” consists of a very real image: The photo of a woman murdered in 1940 during the Soviet invasion.
