Set in 1871, on Denmark’s rough Jutland coast. Martine and Filippa are two God-fearing old spinsters who take in a French cook who fled France after the fall of the Paris Commune. The young woman is tasked with cooking the sparse meals favoured by the two elderly ladies. But when Babette wins the lottery, she fulfils her heartfelt desire - she asks the pious villagers for permission to prepare them an opulent meal. The small community grudgingly accepts her invitation – resolutely determined to resist the pleasures of the flesh. But ultimately, the French masterchef‘s culinary skills work their magic not only on her guests’ taste buds, but also on their hearts. This nimble adaptation of Karen Blixen’s novella was one of the greatest international successes in Scandinavian cinema history.
