Since his parents separated, 13-year-old Simon doesn’t have it easy, commuting back and forth between the two. On top of that, his father Frank has been seeking solace in strict adherence to the Jewish faith. Suddenly, it’s all about keeping kosher and observing every single ritual and custom. So naturally Frank expects that to coincide with his bar mitzvah, the boy will be circumcised, something his parents had never considered important. Simon’s more liberal mother is appalled and drags him off to self-help groups for men who still mourn their lost foreskin. Simon is also horrified at the thought of submitting to a bris ... until he meets the new rabbi, Rebecca, and falls head over heels for her. This not only puts him in fierce competition with his father, it also makes him re-think his attitude toward circumcision, since for Rebecca, only a circumcised man is a real man.
