Retrospective, Iceland 1995, 83 Min., iceland. OV, germ. st, FSK 12

Japanese clerk Hirata travels to Iceland to visit the place where, seven years previously, his parents died in an accident. His trip in a Citroën limousine across the empty landscape is a series of encounters with a culture that he finds very strange. He is ambushed by not only ominous road signs (“Does anyone know you are going this way?”), but also an American hitchhiker and his manic wife. It soon becomes clear that compared to this troll dressed up as a tourist, even Björk would look like a bright fairy ... Fridrik Thór Fridriksson takes the audience along on a “magical mystery tour” filled with comic culture clashes between the salaryman and the local populace. But his road movie is above all a paean to the natural – and supernatural (!) – beauty of Iceland’s winter landscapes.
