Hit the Road Gunnar

Hit the Road Gunnar

Retrospective, Germany / Sweden 2014, 84 Min., germ. OV

Gunnar is shy and reserved. Helping out in his father’s restaurant, he’s never learned even to formulate a sense of what he wants, never mind trying to assert himself. So he’s putty in the hands of Zoe, a hitchhiker he picks up while on his way to Italy. The resolute and heedless young lady persuades him to change course. On the long journey to the new destination of Stockholm, Gunnar is confronted with a host of new experiences that evoke both helpless protest and fascination. What emerged from 21 days of joint vacation is a road movie that travels from southern Germany to Kiel and then across Sweden. Nicolas Ehret said of the film, “the original idea was to make a film and combine it with a trip. A trip where you could also find a piece of yourself.”
