A portrait of a man who in both music and art has always “done it his way”. Peter Brötzmann has been on the road for more than 50 years. For many he was highly controversial, some called him a lunatic. But now he has garnered so many important honours that he is celebrated around the world as the “godfather of free jazz”. The film follows him before, during and after appearances in, among other places, Berlin, Warsaw, London, Remscheid, New York, San Francisco and Shenzhen. He plays with the top musicians in each country, in improvisations that are fascinating, sometimes droll. But we also see Peter Brötzmann in private, a quiet, pensive artist with a good sense of humour. We visit his small garden home in Wuppertal, where he studied at the art school and was exposed to the Fluxus movement. Filled with the need to improvise, he developed his unique musical world, balanced between outbursts of power and subtle, dreamlike fantasy – a poet with saxophone, clarinet and tárogató.
