Roy Andersson’s commercials are like drafts of his successful episodic films – gags and sketches, precisely placed miniatures. The point here, however, is to sell a product. They are renowned for their unusual production values and have been awarded numerous honours, including eight Golden Lions at the Cannes Lions Festival. But Andersson also often made PSAs for institutions or causes, and their provocative form evoked as much enthusiasm as they did disapproval. The Nordic Film Days Lübeck is showing a selection from the vast collection made between 1977 and 2014.
