The Fit Hostel is not far from Keflavik airport, Iceland’s international hub. The shelter houses refugees and asylum-seekers who have made it to Iceland on their own or who have been taken off airplanes on their way to Canada. They come from Afghanistan, Iraq or Iran; from Russia or Mauritania, Sudan or Algeria. Threatened with war, persecution and other catastrophes, they have left their homelands and their old lives behind. Now they are on standby, waiting – sometimes for years – in housing that was intended only as temporary accommodation. The film provides an impression of the fear, uncertainty and sorrow of the protagonists, whose personal chance at a new beginning is entirely dependent on the authorities recognising their request for asylum.
