“If you’re speaking about suicide, then you’re speaking about life and not about death.” In Finland alone, the suicide rate is two per day. With each death a growing community of grieving people is left behind. Over the course of a year, this develops into a major social problem that affects thousands. At the same time, it is a subject that no one wants to talk about. Jukka Kärkkäinen and Sini Liimatainen explore the subject by examining its causes, warning signs and consequences. Using animation, they portray how a young man comes to the decision to end his own life. Interviews with people devastated by suicides are woven together to create a collage of public perception about that radical choice. The film deals with the issues of pain, grief and guilt, but also with the necessity of reaching closure and moving on with one’s life.
